Right now, we are all Tiphne Sharpe, standing in awe of her colleague, Dr. Kathleen Slugocki.

“I don’t know how she does it,” said Sharpe, an exceptional midwife with Women’s Healthcare of Illinois. “She accomplishes so much. It’s like she has more hours in the day than the rest of us.”

In addition to being a board certified obstetrician and gynecologist with expertise in minimally invasive surgery, adolescent and teen healthcare, postpartum depression, and delivering healthy babies and caring for pregnant mamas, Dr. Slugocki somehow found time over the past two years to study for and pass her boards in Obesity Medicine.

“It’s very important to me that I have all the resources to treat every patient,” Dr. Slugocki said. “Studying and passing the boards gives me insights into the reasons and physiology about why patients struggle with their weight.”

Dr. Slugocki describes herself as a woman who has struggled with weight her entire life.

“So many women have been shamed because of their weight, including myself,” she said. “I’m excited to provide tools to help my patients achieve their optimal health in a safe, caring fashion. I am eager to work with my patients to help them work on their weight-loss goals.”

When people battle weight issues, they increase their risk of major health problems, including

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease and strokes
  • Certain types of cancer
  • Sleep apnea
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Pregnancy problems, such as high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and increased risk for cesarean delivery (C-section)

“By focusing on overall health, I can give people a path toward a healthier, happier life,” said Dr. Slugocki, who also happens to be a Fellow in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a mother of twins.

Maybe Tiphne was right … Dr. Slugocki does have more hours in the day than the rest of us.
