What is the difference between a gynecologist and an OBGYN?

A gynecology is a single medical specialization whereas OB/GYN covers both Obstetrics and Gynecology and is usually the professional you should be seeing if you think you are pregnant, wish to be pregnant or can’t get pregnant. OBGYN’s are also generalists who are able to perform surgery which many standard gynecologists do not. All our gynecologists at Women’s Healthcare of Illinois are OB/GYNs and can provide care from both specializations, providing you with complete care for your pregnancy and reproductive health needs.

What is an OBGYN Doctor?

As we have previously mentioned, an OBGYN doctor is a doctor who specializes in both obstetrics and gynecology and are the ideal practitioner to see regarding fertility, pregnancy, and general reproductive health. You do not need a referral to see an OBGYN so feel free to contact our excellent team and schedule your initial appointment as soon as you feel it may be necessary. This all-encompassing approach gives our team at Women’s Healthcare of Illinois the training and tools that they need to address any issues that our patients bring through our doors.

What procedures to OBGYN do?

When you first come to see an OB/GYN you will generally be given a physical examination that will likely include a pap smear, pelvic examination and possibly a breast examination. Your OBGYN may also consider it necessary to run additional tests based on your personal health history as well as your stated needs as a patient. At Women’s Healthcare of Illinois, we are dedicated to helping patients develop health and birth plans that suit their needs as patients and are always willing to work with you to better your health.

OB/GYNs can provide a wide variety of care for their patients. These include standard gynecological procedures and more specialized treatments. These run the gamut as OBGYNs can provide pap smears, colposcopy, HPV screening and treatment, Pelvic Pain, Menopausal Concerns, Gynecologic Surgery, Family Planning, Breast and Ovarian Cancer Screening, IUD Insertion and Removal, Prenatal Genetic Testing and Counseling, 3d and 4d Ultrasounds and many other procedures and checks essential to your reproductive health. In addition, at Women’s Healthcare of Illinois we offer da Vinci Robotic Surgery and the Mona Lisa Touch vaginal rejuvenation surgery.

Should you choose to utilize the services of Women’s Healthcare of Illinois you can be safe in the knowledge that all of our doctors are trained in both Obstetrics and Gynecology so there are no wrong choices no matter whom you see in our offices. We also offer midwifery services to assist in maternal care for additional peace of mind.
